LOG CABINS - THE BENEFITS: Log cabins are popular for many reasons, especially as a comfortable garden room to sit and relax in but also as a workshop or heavy duty storage shed. On the outside cabins have a chunky look and feel. On the inside, with no internal framework, the clean lines look smarter than the inside of a traditional shed or summerhouse. In addition, the wall logs are thicker than the shiplap cladding used in traditional sheds and summerhouses, which provides better insulation. If you want the option of winter use we recommend floor and roof insulation, which is difficult to fit retrospectively so it needs to be fitted with the cabin. We offer low price insulation packs complete with fixings and instructions. Where available, double glazing also improves the insulation especially if the cabin has a large glazed area. Another significant benefit of log cabins is that you get more wood for your money when compared with a traditional shed or summerhouse or garden office. With no prefabricated wall panels a log cabin requires less production time.

SCANDINAVIAN REDWOOD OR WHITEWOOD: The most widely used timber in the UK for years, Scandinavian Redwood and Whitewood grow in the well managed forests of Scandinavia and the coldest parts of Northern Europe. The cold climate ensures slow growth. The growth rings are much closer together than faster growing trees from warmer climates. As a result the timber is heavy and durable with a close grain pattern. The wood is seasoned and kiln dried to achieve the correct moisture content before it is machined. Redwood and Whitewood are so similar in appearance and performance that it is difficult to tell the difference. Both are classified as slightly durable and treatment is required for outside use. The forests of Scandinavia and Northern Europe have been responsibly managed on a sustainable basis for centuries so Scandinavian Redwood or Whitewood is an enviromentally friendly choice.

NATURAL WOOD: First, high grade timber is dried in kilns until it reaches the optimum moisture content, then it is planed smooth and machined into tongued and grooved logs and boards. Next the logs are precisely machined at the ends to ensure a precise fit. Finally, each cabin is carefully packed and wrapped. When you unwrap it the wood is untreated. We recommend treating it only after the cabin has been successfully installed and ideally within a week or two. Treating the logs before fitting may cause the wood to swell up and the logs may not fit together correctly. If you are fitting your cabin in a restricted space where future access will be difficult you can stain the logs during installation by reaching down a few logs at a time as you fit them.

FULLY INTERLOCKING LOG CORNERS: These traditionally made log cabins feature interlocking corner logs. Each wall log is precisely machined and notched out to ensure a strong and weatherproof joint. The first log is laid at the bottom and the rest slot into each other, working upwards one log at a time. No screws or nails are required which makes installation easier and also allows for timber movement. The finished corner assembly is not only immensely strong but also weatherproof and draughtproof. If possible cabins with interlocking logs should be treated after assembly. Treating the logs on site before fitting requires considerable care. If swollen the precision milled joints may not slot together.

CHAMFERRED TOP WALL LOGS: This high specification building features a subtle quality feature. The top log in each side wall is chamferred to the same angle as the roof slope. This little detail provides much improved insulation and draughtproofing. It also provides a much neater internal appearance and the roof boards are easier to fix. This simple design feature eliminates an obvious cold spot. The benefits of this feature are magnified if roof insulation is specified.

HEAVY DUTY TONGUED AND GROOVED FLOOR: This cabin includes a heavy duty timber floor with tongued and grooved floor boards and substantial floor joists. Skirting boards are also included to ensure a neat internal finish. The floor joists and tongued and grooved boards are supplied loose for fast assembly on site. Unlike many log cabin floor kits, all timber is cut to size which saves time during installation. It also ensures that there are no visible joins in the finished floor. The floor is assembled quickly with no visible joints. With some cheaper cabins the boards must be cut to fit on site. This takes much longer and many of the joins are visible afterwards.

PRESSURE TREATED FLOOR JOISTS: The floor joists are the only timber in direct contact with the ground and they are pressure treated for durability. The joists are laid down on the base first and then the first wall logs are placed on top of the joists. The floor boards are often fitted at the end, after the cabin has been completed. This design ensures that the wall logs and the floor boards are not in contact with the ground. It also allows for ventilation and drainage below the floor and the walls. Pressure treatment is a lifetime preservative treatment. The preservative is forced into the timber under pressure in a vacuum and penetrates below the surface. All other treatments apply a coat of stain to the surface of the timber only. With pressure impregnated timber, the chemicals are permanently fixed in the wood. Tanalith E is the most popular preservative used so pressure treated wood is often described as tanalised.

STORM BARS: Storm bars are an important quality feature. One obvious benefit is that storm bars help to protect your log cabin from wind damage. In addition, by clamping the logs together storm bars make the joints more weatherproof and reduce any bowing or twisting of the logs. The storm bars are easily fitted at each corner to hold the individual logs together tight. This counters the impact of strong winds. This feature is especially useful if the cabin has a large roof overhang which is exposed to the wind. Many log cabins do not include any storm bars. These timber storm bars feature elongated fixing holes to allow for timber movement. The bolts are easily accessible after installation so they can be tightened or loosened as required to allow for any timber movement.

JOINERY DOORS & WINDOWS: These log cabins feature joinery made door leaves and window sashes with morticed and tenoned joints throughout. This traditional jointing process is commonly used in the housebuilding industry when timber windows and doors are specified. A rebate or mortice is cut out in one piece of wood which precisely matches a tongue or tenon cut in the other piece of wood. Morticed and tenoned joints are the strongest type of joint used in the construction of wooden windows and doors. High quality handles, locks and hinges are also included.

METAL DOOR THRESHOLD: A weatherproof metal threshold is included to provide sustained access for heavy items such as ride on mowers and motorbikes. Without a metal threshold the wooden frame is vulnerable to wear and the elements. Over time a metal threshold will extend the effective lifespan of the door.

LAMINATED DOORS AND WINDOWS: Laminated wood is an engineered structural timber. Precisely machined small sections of wood are glued together under high pressure with strong waterproof adhesive. After extensive machining the finished piece of timber is barely distinguishable from real wood - it is real wood, but it is stronger and less likely to warp or twist. Doors and windows made with laminated timber are less prone to distortion. This is because one piece of wood can move erratically while many pieces of wood counteract each other. It is rare to find laminated doors and windows specified in a log cabin due to the high production cost. This is an important quality feature because in a log cabin the doors and windows are a vital component which is particularly exposed to the elements. Laminated timber is also kind to the environment because it uses offcuts and creates less waste.

SIZES - LENGTH AND WIDTH: Sizes are sometimes rounded to the nearest nominal size for ease of reading but the correct external wall sizes are listed alongside the price. The first dimension listed is the width and the second dimension is the length. The width refers to the angled gable walls at the front and rear including the door wall. The length refers to the side walls. The sizes listed are the external wall sizes. These sizes do not include the roof overhang. Many other suppliers quote the overall roof size which is much larger. All sizes are approximate.

QUALITY ACCESSORIES AT LOWER PRICES: Since we were established in 1981 we have developed a unique expertise which is reflected in our superb range of great value accessories. We offer a wide choice of durable roof coverings, high performance floor and roof insulation and heavy duty relocatable base kits. Each kit includes suitable materials and fixings in sufficient quantities with detailed instructions. We offer quality components at very competitive prices. This service is only available to customers who buy one of our buildings and our accessories are not available separately.

GRANULAR STEEL ROOF TILES: These lightweight granular steel roof tiles are guaranteed for 40 years. The tiles have been tried and tested in every climate throughout the world from hurricanes and hailstones to heatwaves. Uses include homes, flats, schools, offices and all types of buildings. The tiles are pressed from galvanized steel with two further protective layers of weather resistant acrylic and a coverage of natural stone chips. The natural stone chips are bonded to the tiles to give a weatherproof surface with an attractive textured appearance similar to clay tiles. The appearance of colours and shades may vary between different screens or devices.

CEDAR ROOF SHINGLES: Attractive and durable, cedar shingles make the ideal roof for high specification garden sheds. These genuine cedar roof shingles are traditionally made from Western Red Cedar. The individual cedar shingles are laid over a felted solid pine inner roof. Each individual cedar tile is a known as a shingle. Cedar shingles have long been a popular roofing material for domestic and public buildings in large parts of North America where cedar shingles have a reputation for warmth and longevity. Cedar has an unrivalled reputation for durability and cedar shingles often last for many decades. We use only the highest grade of shingles which are 100% heartwood, 100% free from defects and 100% edge grain. Heartwood edge grain is the densest possible cut which ensures maximum durability. All fixings are covered by the next row of felt tiles, partly to ensure a neat appearance with concealed fixings but mainly to protect the fixing holes from any possible moisture.

DECORATIVE FELT TILES: Mineral coated bitumen felt tiles are an attractive and durable roofing material which is far more hardwearing than standard roofing felt. Traditionally used for small buildings only in the UK, felt tiles are used much more in Scandinavia and North America where they are used widely in general housebuilding. The sophisticated design features a strip of almost dry bitumen adhesive. Over time each tile sticks to the tile below for improved waterproofing and windproofing. All fixings are covered by the next row of felt tiles, partly to ensure a neat appearance with concealed fixings but mainly to protect the fixing holes from any possible moisture. Mineral felt tiles are made using asphalt with a bitumen binder and an external covering of durable and attractive natural stone chips. Mineral felt tiles are often described as felt shingles because the design resembles traditional cedar shingles.

UNTEARABLE ROOF FELT: This untearable mineral coated bitumen roofing felt is more durable than standard roofing felt. Standard felt is paper backed or fibreglass backed, both of which are very easy to tear or puncture. This weakness makes standard felt vulnerable to wind damage. Although our untearable roofing felt looks and feels the same it includes a concealed plastic membrane which makes it far stronger. The most common cause of damage to a standard felt roof is a gust of wind getting under the felt and tearing it. Once the felt is torn it is quickly ruined. Standard felt can be torn very easily but our untearable felt cannot be torn by hand without a cutting edge. Even aggressive attempts to tear the felt by hand will only wrinkle the edges as the hidden membrane is stretched.

UNDERFLOOR INSULATION: The underfloor insulation is designed to suit our timber floor. The rigid insulation boards are suspended between the floor joists and above the ground. The top face of the insulation is just below the floorboards. The solidity of the floor is unaffected by this design. The internal appearance is also unchanged with attractive and durable tongued and grooved boards. Detailed instructions are supplied. The floor insulation is expanded polystyrene, certified by the British Board of Agrement. It is 25mm thick to ensure ample clearance above the ground, which optimizes the performance of the insulation.

ROOF INSULATION: Our roof insulation is 50mm thick polyurethane foam with reflective silver alloy laminate facings on both sides. It is certified by the British Board of Agrement. The roof insulation is laid over the roof boards and below the roof covering. This ensures that the internal appearance is unchanged with attractive tongued and grooved boards. No internal lining boards are required. The kit features rigid foam boards which are lightweight and easy to install. If your order includes roofing felt or felt tiles longer nails are included for fixing through the insulation. If your order includes cedar shingles or granular steel tiles additional decking boards are supplied which are laid over the insulation to provide a suitable surface for fixing the tiles. Detailed instructions are supplied. The roof insulation increases the ridge height by approximately 50mm which may be of critical importance if you need to keep the overall height below 2.5m for planning purposes.

OPTIONAL GEORGIAN OR CONTEMPORARY GLAZING: The Georgian style glazing beads are purely decorative and entirely optional. You can fit them if you prefer Georgian glazing or you can leave them out if you prefer a contemporary glazing style with large panes of glass. You can also add or remove the Georgian glazing beads at any time, even months or years after the original installation. For this reason there is no need to state your preference when you order.

RECYCLED PLASTIC BASE KITS: Our durable eco-grid and eco-paving base kits are a practical and affordable alternative to slabs or concrete. Lightweight and easy to install within a few minutes, these recycled polypropylene pavers simply click together with no fixings needed. The interlocking design helps to spread weight and ensures greater rigidity. Weed membranes are not needed below a timber floor. The self draining design prolongs the life of a timber floor. Unlike paving or concrete our plastic bases are fully relocatable. The base is normally at least 2" or 50mm larger than your building. Where space permits the base is normally laid full size but if required in a tight location our plastic pavers can be cut. Fast delivery within 3-5 days ensures that you can start work quickly.

ECO-GRID BASE KITS: Eco-grids are recommended if the sub-base is soil, sand or pea shingle but not on hard surfaces such as concrete, because the underside is not flat. Integral pegs on the underside help to level the base grids more easily in soil or sand or shingle. Our eco-grid plastic bases can support up to 200 tonnes per square metre. We offer exactly the same eco-grids as driveways and carparks. Gravel or shingle infill is not required below a timber floor. Whatever you store in your building, our eco-grids will support the weight easily. Each eco-grid is 472mm x 472mm and 40mm thick with an immensely strong 60x60mm hexagonal cell structure. Extensive preparation is not normally required - just level the soil and lay the pavers directly on soil or on a thin layer of sand or pea shingle. Any exposed edges around the base can be left unfilled or filled with gravel or shingle.

ECO-PAVING BASE KITS: Eco-paving is recommended if the sub-base is a hard surface such as concrete or paving slabs, because the pavers feature a flat and level underside. Our eco-paving is less brittle than concrete paving slabs, with a strong supporting structure. The surface looks and feels similar to pressed concrete slabs, with a slightly textured finish. Each eco-paver is 385mm x 385mm and 40mm thick. The pavers are quickly and easily easily laid over an existing hard surface.

MICROPOROUS PRESERVATIVE - DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR: Our quality microporous preservatives are impervious to water but not to water vapour. This allows the wood to breathe. You can order up to 3 separate colours if required. At least two coats are normally required with a further coat at periodic intervals.

Our 3 star preservative is practical and affordable with a choice of 4 colours. It covers around 10 square metres per litre and normally lasts 1-2 years before a further coat is required.

Our 4 star preservative is a high quality preservative which covers around 9 square metres per litre and normally lasts 2-5 years before a further coat is required. It is available with a choice of 12 colours.

Our 5 star preservative is a deluxe high build preservative which can be used to achieve a stunning finish. Each extra coat increases the colour and sheen. It covers around 8 square metres per litre and normally lasts 2-5 years before a further coat is required. It is available with a choice of 12 colours.

Based on average coverage five litres of our 4 star preservative is enough for two coats on an 8'x10' shed or an 8'x8' log cabin. Ten litres is enough for three coats on a 10'x16' shed or a 12'x10' log cabin. Coverage varies according to the smoothness of the surface and the porosity of the timber. We recommend that you order more than you need to be sure that you have easily enough. All of these preservatives are safe for use with children and pets. These microporous preservatives are only available when you purchase a Summer garden building or if you purchased a Summer building in the past. Prices include free mainland delivery to England, Wales and southern Scotland. Colours are only as accurate as reproductive techniques allow.

WATERPROOF COLOUR SEAL - DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR: This advanced water-based microprous timber treatment uses the latest high-tech nanotechnology to create a long-lasting waterproof wood coating that is environmentally friendly. It is suitable for use on all softwood and hardwood products and is especially recommended for use on pressure treated timber, including sheds, summerhouses, gazebos, fencing and garden furniture. This timber treatment will colour, protect and enhance your exterior wood. It contains a mould inhibitor to protect the coating and can be used on all outside and inside timber. It gives a traditional matt wood stain finish in a range of natural colours. It can easily be applied by sprayer, brush or roller. It is recommended that the second coat is applied as soon as the first coat is touch dry. We advise for ultimate performance the timber has a wood preservative pre-treatment. For the first treatment, two coats are recommended and will give a traditional wood stain finish that is long lasting. A further coat is recommended every 2-5 years. One litre covers approximately 10-12 square metres. Coverage varies according to the smoothness of the surface and the porosity of the timber. On average five litres covers a 12x8 shed with two coats and ten litres covers a 10x20 with three coats. It is recommended that 2 coats be applied. We recommend that you order more than you need to be sure that you have easily enough. The appearance of colours and shades may vary between different screens or devices. Prices include free mainland delivery to England, Wales and southern Scotland.

WATERPROOF CLEAR SEAL - DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR: Our hardwearing clear seal is ideal as a clear varnish for bare timber or as a waterproof top coat for painted wood and pressure treated timber. It is also ideal as a waterproof floor varnish, especially the polyurethane clear seal. The smooth and shiny finished surface is waterproof and easy to clean. Available in a choice of acrylic or polyurethane, these colourless water based coatings are almost odourless and recommended for smooth planed timber only. One coat is normally required as a sealing top coat on painted or treated timber. A minimum of two coats are normally required on untreated wood. Up to three coats may be required for floors. An unsealed timber floor quickly shows muddy boot marks and other dirt. For best results a floor should be treated at the earliest opportunity while the timber is new and clean. On average five litres of our 5 star clear seal is enough for three coats on a 12'x12' floor, two coats on the walls of an 8'x8' log cabin or one coat on the walls of a 12'x16' log cabin. We recommend that you order more than you need to be sure that you have easily enough. The price includes free mainland delivery to England, Wales and southern Scotland.

NATURAL WOOD OIL - DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR: Our traditional wood oil preservative is linseed oil based and provides a natural ecologically friendly alternative to modern alkyd based preservatives. Wood oil combines the waterproofing qualities of a paint finish with the high absorption rate of woodstain. The natural oiliness provides a highly water repellent surface which protects the wood from moisture. The oil also penetrates deep into the wood and emphasizes the grain. The high elasticity of wood oil allows it to expand and contract with the wood as climatic conditions vary. Three coats are recommended with a further coat after 1-3 years. One litre covers approximately 12 to 16 square metres. Coverage varies according to the smoothness and porosity of the timber so you should order more than you need. On average five litres covers a 10x8 log cabin with three coats and ten litres covers a 20x13 log cabin with 3 coats. Colours are only as accurate as reproductive techniques allow. Prices include free mainland delivery to England, Wales and southern Scotland.

BURGLAR ALARM: This simple and effective battery operated burglar alarm kit is easy to install in any wooden garden building. The main panel features a digital keypad and a powerful built-in siren. Two pre-wired door contacts are also included complete with a length of cable which plugs into the main panel. A 9 volt PP3 alkaline battery is required, which is not supplied with the kit. The alarm is easy to set using the digital keypad. A delay allows plenty of time to enter or leave the building after setting the alarm. Once the alarm has been armed it will be triggered by opening the door or tampering with the wiring. When the alarm is activated the siren emits a powerful and unpleasant sound to deter intruders.

Installation

  • Low cost installation available in many areas
  • Pay separately on completion

THOUSANDS OF SATISFIED CUSTOMERS: Since we were established in 1981 we have connected thousands of customers to our unique network of independent fitters and baselayers. Specialist teams have offered to install our buildings or lay bases in many areas at low fixed rates in return for recurring work. The prices are offered within a specific area and subject to conditions. You deal direct with the fitter or baselayer which keeps the prices low and you pay them separately on completion. We make no commission except for a small upfront referral fee. The fitters and baselayers pay us nothing and we pay them nothing. Although we do not manage or supervise the work directly we listen carefully to feedback and any team who provides a poor service is removed from our network. For decades this effective system has provided a low cost option for our customers with high levels of satisfaction.

LOW PRICES FOR BASELAYING AND INSTALLATION: Low cost fitters and baselayers are available in many areas. To see the prices in your local area just enter the first half of your postcode at the top of every page or CLICK HERE. All of the specialist teams available in your area are listed alongside the building prices. To see their prices and conditions just click on the blue "i" symbol next to each team. To order online just add your chosen fitter or baselayer to your shopping basket before you proceed to the checkout.

NO FITTERS IN YOUR AREA? If you cannot see any fitters or baselayers in your area please contact us. We can often obtain a competitive quote from a team who is willing to travel a bit further. If you experience any other problems, for example entering your postcode or finding the fitting prices just contact us.
